I keep hearing the same bag story: “I already have slope on my laser, so I don’t need a book,” or “my watch has greens, so paper is dead.” Those sentences mix three jobs. I lined the tools up the way you actually use them — standing over one mid-range putt — and wrote down what each one is built to return.

This is not another Arccos vs GolfLogix vs Bushnell GPS platform guide. That piece is about which number system fits your season. This one is about the putt in front of you.

Arccos stays out of this table on purpose. In our GPS guide it wins on season-long shot data, not on drawing a putt. Bushnell’s laser reputation is distance lock; Bushnell’s printed Green Book is a separate paper SKU (GolfLogix mapping under Revelyst) — do not buy the laser and assume you bought the book.

Printed green book — what the page is for

A printed green book is a drawing of the putting surface you can rotate until it matches the ground. On a PuttView Yardage + Green Map page you get dual-view greens (thermal + detailed). On a Bushnell Green Book you get the published paper stack: Approach Strategy Heat Map, Green Slope Heat Map (0–7% intensity language from their Sep 2026 release), and a Slope Percentage Grid, plus yardage pages.

What the book gave me on the putt: a stable picture that does not depend on battery, signal, or a phone in the cart. I could point at a grid square and talk about the fall the way a caddie would. What it did not give me: live pin GPS, or a plays-like number into the green.

If the committee wants paper, this is the tool that still works. Local rules and green-reading material limits still apply — check the notice sheet and USGA Rule 4.3 language before you assume any drawing is fine. Our broader printed-book buying decision lives on the yardage book head-to-head.

Slope laser — what it is not for on the green

Slope mode on a laser adjusts distance for elevation change. That is an approach job: the pin is uphill, the laser says the shot plays longer than the raw yardage. Useful from 140 out. Standing over a 20-footer, that same slope number does not tell you left-to-right break, cup side, or speed.

On this putt the Bushnell Tour V6 (Slope on) still did what lasers do well — lock a number to a target. It did not replace a green drawing. Tournament mode exists on these units because slope-adjusted distance is often restricted in competition; that is a distance-rule conversation, not a green-reading one. If you bought slope thinking it was a digital green book, return to the table above.

GPS watch with green maps — the on-wrist picture

GolfLogix is the GPS name in our allowed set that actually leans into green maps. On Apple Watch, their published Putt View / heat-map flow is: inside close range you get color slopes and contours, you can zoom and rotate so the map matches your stance, and you see putt distance from GPS position. That is a green-reading answer on the wrist — not the same product as Arccos shot tracking, and not the same product as a Bushnell laser lock.

Trade-offs that showed up immediately: the screen is small, you need the watch charged and the round started correctly, and a local rule can still block green-reading graphics even when distance measuring is allowed. Paper does not care about any of that. The watch does care.

Who should buy what (for this job)

  • You play events that want paper: buy a printed green book first (PuttView tiers or Bushnell Green Book). Do not let a slope laser talk you out of it.
  • You already own a laser and thought slope = green reading: keep the laser for approaches; add paper or a GolfLogix green-map plan for putts. Slope did not fail — you asked it the wrong question.
  • You want the break picture on your wrist for casual rounds: GolfLogix’s watch/app green maps are the GPS-side tool in this trio. Arccos if your real pain is season data, not this putt. Bushnell if you want a clean yardage device and will get green reading elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Does a slope laser read greens?

No. Slope mode changes a distance for elevation on approaches. It does not draw left-to-right break on a putt. Use a printed green book or a GPS product with green maps (in this guide: GolfLogix) for that job.

Can I use GolfLogix putt maps in a tournament?

Sometimes distance measuring is allowed and green-reading graphics are not. Check the committee’s local rules before you assume the watch is legal. When the sheet wants paper, bring paper.

Is a Bushnell Green Book the same as a Bushnell laser?

No. The printed Green Book is a paper product (GolfLogix mapping under Revelyst). A Tour V6 / Pro-series laser is a rangefinder. Buy the SKU that matches the job.

Do I need both a book and a GPS watch?

If you mix casual rounds and paper-only events, yes — different days, different rules. If you never enter anything and you like the wrist map, GolfLogix-style green maps can be enough for the putt. The slope laser still does not replace either one on the green.
